The Ready To Build campaign showcases five critical investments - including the Hudson Tunnel Project - that are vital to the realization of a renewed, modern passenger rail system. Opened in 1910, the existing two-track North River Tunnel carries passengers between Manhattan and New Jersey. Severely damaged in Superstorm Sandy, urgent construction of a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River and rehabilitation of the existing tunnel is proposed. The project is also a key component of the Gateway Program, a suite of strategic rail infrastructure improvements designed to enhance current services and create new capacity in and around New York City. The Ready To Build campaign showcases five critical investments - including the Portal North Bridge project - that are vital to the realization of a renewed, modern passenger rail system. Located between Kearny and Secaucus, New Jersey, the two-track moveable swing bridge is a critical link for intercity and commuter customers traveling to New York City. When the century-old bridge doesn’t close properly, delays ripple up and down the Northeast Corridor. Portal Bridge will be replaced with a new high-level, fixed span bridge resulting in faster trip times and greater reliability. Early action construction is underway fall 2017. The Portal North Bridge Project is also a key component of the Gateway Program. To view videos and materials about the Ready To Build campaign, visit nec.amtrak...
The Port Authority will finish the deck removal portion of the Raise the Roadway project at the Bayonne Bridge six months ahead of schedule, ensuring completion of this important project in advance of commercial operations at the widened Panama Canal. The deck removal will provide critical navigational clearance for larger post-Panamax ships to access port terminals in New York and New Jersey when the Panama Canal opens.
